Why Blog?

Five reasons why I think you should blog.

1) So you will have a working brain. Writing is a good discipline to gather your thoughts, and reflect. We live in such a wiz-bang society our brains are being rewired for a jumbled mess.

2) Keeps in touch with family and friends. I hope my kids will have a time capsule of their father and who he is.

3) Informative. Never thought it would be such a case, but people actually DO READ my blog! If I can make someone think, or challenge their thinking it makes the work worth it.

4) Keeps you growing. Stagnation in life in any aspect is horrendous.

5) It's a cheap and wonderful way to offer your 'two-cents' worth. Because it's only worth 'two-cents' - it better be free because not all us can a George Will.

Why Sports Reflect Life

You’re being trained to be great, now go see how good you can get.
Steve Young, 1994 Winning SuperBowl QB

Well, the SuperBowl is upon us again.

A thought dawned on me as I watched the 1994 49ers SuperBowl win by NFL films - part of all the preceding SuperBowl memories before the current one. A question came to mind: why do grown men, with multi-million dollar contracts put so much work, so much resources to play for a plastic trophy?

Sports in it's truest essence is about life, and Steve Young's quote summarized it with, "You're trained to be great, now good see how good you can get."
It's certainly not about the money because pro-athletes already have it, and it's not even about fame because it's finite in it's duration.

It's about the stories, events, and struggles of lives lived against odds and triumphing over it. Life is exciting if there's an opponent to your goal. A refinement of all the stages leading to vanquishing that obstacle: to plant that flag shouting to the world you've made it.

As an audience, we love to see the story unfold of someone fighting against the weight and burden of a struggle to a goal. When that goal is realized a discovery is made: you have what it takes to be great.

But life is more than sports; life beckons greatness in each individual. What plan of greatness does God have for us? For me? For you?

When we fail to dream, aspire - we are regulated to ordinary boring lives. The greater danger is accepting that a normalcy and giving up on dreams.

Will our children dream to be astronauts? CEOs? William Wilberforces? Mother Teresa?

I cannot help to think as an adult somewhere we lost our ability to dream. That beautiful child-like heart to be naive to the naysayers that say, "It cannot be done." We too quickly accept our lot in life; that person is lost. That disease is fatal. He will never change. It's too late.

Amazing that our God who created us in His heart never loses the beautiful quality of seeing greatness in us. He could have started over a long time, but He sees beauty possible once again. The impure - pure. The loser - a winner. The unloved - loved.

It is a godliness to dream and believe what Christ said, "With men things are impossible, but with God all things are possible."

Wedding Registry

What do we pick? What do we get?

Michele and I just finished up our wedding registry. It's been tiring, but we just really had alot of fun together just taking a UPC laser gun and zapping stuff. HOW women shop for eight hours on high heels is beyond me.

We gave a wide range for gifts for people to buy in all budgets. Michele's grandmother and mother was encouraging us to ZAP ZAP ZAP as much as you can. It's like being a four-year old and going, "I want that, and that...".

It did come to a point where we were running out of ideas, and I just went nuts, and starting zapping furniture. Someone on the Italian side might just spring for something like that.

We even thought about zapping crazy items that you wouldn't expect for a wedding registry: Chuck Norris TOTAL GYM, fifty bags of potatoes chips, twenty garden hoses, but we thought otherwise.

Wilberforce - a life to be reckon with

http://www.amazinggracemovie.com/castcrew_wilberforce.php

There's a new movie coming out that I'm excited about: the story of William Wilberforce, the great Brit who labored 20 years to see slavery abolished in England. I also think it's such a cool last name: WILBERFORCE. I thought about naming my future son WILBERFORCE ASHER WONG. How cool is that??!

The film was produced by the same people who did the remarkable film about Ray Charles, so you know it's going to be a good film.

Wilberforce was introduced to me by John Piper, pastor at Bethlehem church in the Midwest. I think only with God's power, grace that a white man could stand against his peers for sons and daughters of Africa and call slavery evil. It's a life worth noting; hundreds of years a man's legacy is rarely spoken of, but here we speak of this courageous man who lived a life with reckless abandon in God's plan.

This Brit embodies the essence of this: seeing not as the majority sees, but having the vision to see WHAT CAN BE.

That's visionary.

What's in your ear and brain?

You ever listen to music that seem so timeless, so enduring you just want to play hooky the whole day to listen to that cd all day?

Well, Miss Corinne Bailey Rae, a British r&b singer - is just that. Her style is so unique, so chill...the best I can describe her music is it's like a good cup of coffee. You just take that first sip and sigh, and know that your day is good. This is a truly gifted singer, with a unique style that is both dreamy, and timeless. Two songs to check out is PUT YOUR RECORD ON and I'D LIKE TO.

Ain't nothing better to chill reading a book on a winter day with or going to your local barista with.

WILD AT HEART:

I've come across this book a few years ago, and now I'm listening to it again.

It's a workshop given for men to rediscover their masculinity. The design of man is to fight for a cause, provide, and rescue beauty. In the flaw of men without God, the fighter is turned into a war-monger, instead of rescuing beauty men abuse or debase women. What's more important is when a man doesn't live this adventure he becomes dead, he's no longer a hero. His heart dies. BUT when he sees his destiny, what a life!

John Eldredge, WILD AT HEART. Check it out men!

SUPERBOWL bound 2007

The Bears are 2007 SuperBowl bound.

My father-in-law asked my evaluation of Rex Grossman's performance; my verdict: Rex did well, and he did what he needed to win. There's no doubt about this: Rex has led the Bears to the Superbowl with his arm.

I also face a quandry: rooting for the Bears or Colts. I will be happy if either win. I'll be happy for the best QB in the NFL: Peyton - and appreciate his career, but I will certainly be happy if the Bears win too. For sure I'm rooting for the Bears but I do like Peyton.

Squirrels and Credit Cards

I was watching a squirrel this morning, and Suzie Orman at the same time. Couldn't help but break out the fig newtons (Paul Newman's organics to be exact) and toss the wintry furball two. To my suprise, the little feller didn't sit down and munch on it - thought he would be hungry after two days of snowfall. He hopped, and scrambled around and then he buried it! Sure enough he took the second one and did the same thing!!!

Then I'm watching Suzie Orman, a girl wanted to pay for her honeymoon (why isn't her husband, but that's another article) - her stats were: 25 years old, 20k in credit card debt, 28k in student loans, 2600 monthly income, and 800 rent. Suzie quickly calculated that this girl has to fork over $1800 per month and that's not counting living expenses - food, gas...etc. The advice Suzie gave was NO.

Then it occurred to me. Some animals are smarter than people. The squirrel could have satisfied himself immediately, but no...he buried it for a 'rainy' day. Animals are better investors than us, because they understand the truth about their lives: if I don't save, I die. Simple. People spend what they don't have (I didn't say INVEST in what they don't have - smart using credit to your advantage).

I bet the girl, if she was a squirrel, she would have eaten all the fig newtons.

***

Credit card tip: found out closing credit cards can hurt your accounts by a 10%. BUT closing your credit card with a greater credit to debt ratio and how long it's been opened hurts you more - 35%. So the rule of thumb, if you close credit cards pick the one you opened most recently with the lowest credit. Keep longer cards with the biggest credit given.

Stay another week Rex

**

Superbowl. It's almost upon us, and Chicago pulled off a squeaker, and Rex did very well.

Unfortunately, so did the Patriots. I am tired of seeing them pop up and I hope the Colts really do a number on them. The Patriots dancing on the Chargers mid-field was pretty low. Sentimental favorite Saints are now facing the Bears. I never did like the Saints, but a part of me can't help but be happy for them to where they are at.

What's Daddy like?

My children will one day ask Michele about this.

It's amazing to think about, but your children will need to know the origin and background of who they are in order to BE.

Lose your parent, your identity...and you will go topsy-turvy as to what is life about. That's why adults search past history wanting to know WHO they are by searching the past. One day, God willing, I will die of ripe age, but my children will want to know about my interests...my soul...my dreams. Which made me start a BUZZ column.

I decided to start a BUZZ column/note to let friends, and family know what's buzzing in my head.

SO...for my contacts, check out my new BUZZ column on the left of the blog. It's what's been on my mind recently. You might find a book, a site, or some tiddle of info you could use.

For now it's the new season of 24 - fantatical about it. Only regret? Not watching it with Corey R!
Book I'm reading? Soul Cravings. For sure this book moved to into my top 10 books of books to read.
And lastly, the iPhone: not as much as I thought I wanted as much of an impact it will make. This cell phone is a literal computer in your pocket...and will change the cell industry...light years ahead of today's cell phones.

Why the Essay below G?

I couldn't help after a poignant discussion with some friends of Michele's parents throw up this essay on the blog.

The topic of Christianity came up, and why Michele and I believe what we believe; and I began my explanation with an apology. First of all, I like to apologize for Christ, on behalf of Christians. We've made alot of mistakes. We have made things black and white, and many times Christians are the worse elements to the cause of Christ. Far too narrowed, far too judgmental and far to unloving. (Humility is a great place to start with inquiries of any discussion) Then I gave a few thoughts.

It was this humility that D****** came away after an hour of discussion and said, "That was the most intelligent answer I've heard from Christianity." I didn't hide behind apologetics, nor the bible, and was praying for as much sincerity I could muster because D***** was sincerely searching. You see D****'s wife is slowly dying - her body is dying.

Deep inside my heart I ached for this man, as my journey of marriage is about to start he is facing the end of his.

Makes you think doesn't it?

The essay below was written with the underlining belief that Christianity is about LOVE.

A few years ago if you ask me about Christianity I would have opened the bible and read verses.

Now I would start off with how Michele won my heart and what the power of love did to me.

The beauty of love - the love stories we've read, the movies we've wept over - is about the echoes of the human heart's yearning. A yearning to belong and love. When we lose that we lose our humanity. Courtship, marriage are all glimpses designed by God to awaken us to return to God.

Were you meant to feel so ALIVE only to lose it to death?

Is it not so cruel to find someone you adore, only to lose them after 50+ years of marriage? If you were youthful all those years of journeying together in this life with vigor would you want it to end? No. Mortaility awaits us all at some point...and that's why we grieve, but in my heart I believe the journey doesn't end.

That's why I believe what I believe: love was meant to last forever. The sacrifices of Christ, and his unfailing devotion woos us like a knight giving up his life for his love. This life only serves as a reminder of what's to come.

We were all meant to be found, rescued and loved.

What is Christianity?

I wrote this essay a few months ago, being in love with my beloved has given me some insight to God's heart.

He is truly the great romantic.

ISAIAH 57:19
18 I have seen his ways, and will heal (her);
I will also lead (her),
And restore comforts to (her)
And to his mourners.
19 “I create the fruit of the lips:
Peace, peace to her who is far off and to her who is near,”
Says the Lord,
“And I will heal (her).”

The knight raced to the limp figure on the forest road.

He finally found her.

He knelt beside her as he pulled his helmet off, and lifted her chin, and he stared into her eyes. The once lively eyes were dilating and her breath was shallow. The maiden was passing into the land of shadows.

The poison in her was stealing her life, little by little. She almost didn’t care at this point, but she found him once more faithful – why doesn’t he give up on me?!

In her heart she believed he’d journeyed many miles racing across fields and asking town after town where she was. At one point, in her own disdain, she let herself believed there was no longer any gladness within her hoping her heart would be darkness.

She wanted a quiet place to let her heart dance it’s last dance upon jagged glass and let the life bleed from her.
There wasn’t any room for sorrow, there was too sorrow for one heart to bear.

The forest was quiet. Sunlight stabbed beams of light through the enchanted forest. A warm glow basked around the knight. His eyes were of strength, kindness and comfort.

She smiled weakly as they both sat under the shaded trees. The color of her skin was spotted yellow – the poison was reaching to seize her heart.

The knight's gentle stroke brushing the hair from her face revealed the face of beauty, but as the gaze of the noble knight looked deeper...sadness overtook him.

He didn’t have much time.. the knight’s heart was heavy as he saw her hand limp.

Then the knight’s warm hand moved upon the maiden’s heart – he held her gently.

The wind rustled hues of various leaves as it stirred around them, and the animals in the forest...stopped. Tiny slices of light began to dart around the two and the knight began to sing. His voice sang words the girl could not understand. She felt an inner stirring of warmth tingle inside her body, her blood started to stir and it chased away the coldness within her.

The song seem to increase the brightness of the light that began to slice into this world’s dimension and the leaves swirled around with greater intensity. Between the embraced figures a soft light grew as embers of yellows, reds began to cast a glow around the two. The song grew in strength...the animals in the forest stopped to stare. It was familiar to the song of the Athelea Tree....life was being born anew once more.

Then the song faded only to be swallowed by the silence of the forest.

The knight collapsed gasping...and the girl sat there staring in disbelief. Sweat beads covered his face...her hands touched his face – it was hot like fire. A fever. She bit her lip and try to hold it back. She was healed...at His cost.

She collapsed sobbing upon his chest. She knew...what happened. The knight heaved his chest with difficulty, and his eyes glazed into darkness. The man smiled weakly to the maiden.

She held his head with tears streaking down her face sobbing, “Why did you do this? Why?”

The maiden’s tears salty tears fell upon the knight’s face. He blinked away the wetness and just smiled.

The knight’s eyes closed, it was like the morning rain after a battle. The song, that was not understood was now...heard:

Life’s passing moment upon the mourning field,
Hope fades from man, and downtrodden he casts,

Whence, light arises like a defender’s shield,
Heaven dips the ladle of ocean’s mercy,

Strength for your flesh and bones,
Life sings her song
Brightly, shining in every lasting glory
Forgotten in the washing of the grace’s rain....
Arise, arise like flowers blooming!

A twinkle in the knight’s eye comforted the woman as the knight’s body began to slowly shake, “So you might live.”
(I’ve come that they might have life, and life abundantly)

“No, no.” she sobbed, “..this was mine to bear. It was mine.”

“No, it wasn’t yours to bear alone...don’t you see? I’ve journeyed again to once more fight for you. This whole...time I was by your side. I never left, I’ve always loved you from eternity and I've never, ever will give up on you....

Morning
Thou art all fair, my love; there is no spot in thee. (Song 4:7)
The whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint. From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment. (Isa. 1:5, 6) We are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags. (Isa. 64:6) I know that in me (that is, in my flesh), dwelleth no good thing. (Rom. 7:18)
Ye are washed, … ye are sanctified, … ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. (1 Cor. 6:11) The King’s daughter is all glorious within. (Psa. 45:13) Perfect through my comeliness, which I had put upon thee, saith the Lord God. (Ezek. 16:14)
Let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us. (Psa. 90:17)
These are they which … have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. (Rev. 7:14) A glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but … holy and without blemish. (Eph. 5:27) Ye are complete in him. (Col. 2:10)

Wisconsin New Year Wonderland

CAPTION "Think we can get Gordon out of the snowmobile? That hole was deeper than I thought."

**
Winter Wisconsin Memories: A Series of Firsts

Gordon for the first time:
...was in Wisconsin for a snowfall - as you can see by the post below - simply breathtaking
...rode a snowmobile - cautiously at first, and then wanting to be a bat out of hell
...walked across a frozen lake
...watched people play golf on a frozen lake
...ate creamed herring
...ate at ARBY'S for the first time - actually not bad....
...shoveled snow

with many thanks to the gracious hospitality of Michele's parents: Craig and Louise. I had some deep and meaningful conversations with Michele's parents' friends too.

A great New Year - doesn't get any more Americana than that: northwoods with an open fire watching football and eating great food.

Next on our agenda: the wedding.
